Me And My Place In Space is a wonderful book for all
of those little stargazers and even those who have never considered what is past the
stars, moon and the dark! Its illustrations are bright and captivating, even for the oldest readers! This book is a playful
introduction to space and explains what kids see in the night sky. The story tells of a little girl and
her sidekick cat's travels to space to get an up close look at the moon, stars, and planets. The author,
Joan Sweeney, with the help of illustrator, Annette Cable, has done an excellent job relating our galaxy
to the planet we live on in kid friendly terms, so that children can begin to gain an understanding of
what is really "up there". The book is filled with interesting facts that are not too scientific, but
just right for preschoolers to grasp. The close of the story has several open ended questions that will
get imaginations churning and would be great for additional discussion, an art project, or center time
so that children could mesh their artistic abilities with their creative thinking abilities.
This is one of my son's favorite books and it really
makes me say "WOW!" As I am sure most of us do, I forget to take the time to see what is so amazing
right in front of us and this book helps us to put
some of these great things into "real people" terms so that we can appreciate them all over again with the
kids.
I recommend this book for any child who enjoys looking
at the stars, the sun or the moon!
