A true feast for the eyes is Jan
Brett's The Twelve Days of Christmas. Each page is a beautiful tapestry of
art work all depicting the famous 12 days of Christmas. It's difficult not
to burst into song on each page as your child learns the countdown of
charming creatures.
The editor's
note on the back page explains what the 12 days of Christmas really are.
Most of us don't know the history of this beloved Christmas song that
dates back to the 13th century, and how it came to be.
Jan Brett is
truly a gifted artist with a flair for detail. As you scan the borders of
each page you will find a story within the story of families preparing for
Christmas. The sentiment of "Merry Christmas" is written in 11
languages for a multicultural touch-children love hearing different
languages and may even learn to repeat many of the ways to say "Merry
Christmas".
The Twelve
Days of Christmas by Jan Brett is rich with holiday tradition and
beautiful enough for your coffee table. Maybe we can even bring back it's
original use as a popular family game sung and played on the 12th night of
the celebration and see who can remember each verse in the proper
order-good luck!
