When the Earth Wakes is a beautiful story about how the
seasons change throughout the year while the pictures focus on a mother bear
and her cub. The poetic text never mentions the bears. The story starts
"When the earth wakes in the spring..." and continues to explain how the
earth takes care of her self. The seasons are explained as if it was a long
day. A time frame a preschooler can better understand and relate to, then a
year. The earth starts out her day, by throwing "off her snowy
blankets." Summer is represented as midday. "She is wide awake and full
of life." Autumn is represented by late evening, "The earth becomes
drowsy". Winter is when she sleeps and "and dreams until spring." This
story is so elegantly told. Any child is sure to love it.
The
illustrations for this story are simple and beautiful. They were created
using colored pencils on black paper for a rich if dark effect and works in
lots of large details, good for pointing out to children. The text is bold
and easy to read.
I
highly recommend this book for preschool children age 2 and up.
