Elefantina's Dream
By XJ Kennedy

Review by: Lori Plach

Elefantina is much like an ordinary little girl. As she watches ice skating on television, she dreams that it could be her someday. This would be an incredible feat from a practical appearance, since Elefantina is an elephant.
Her grandmother encourages the young girl's dream. She suggests that she earn some money by using her coconut trees. Elefantina would like to make enough to send away for some skates of her own. With her grandmother's offer, "Elfy's Nut Hut" opens for business. Elfy's business is going great and soon earns enough to make her purchase but she wonders just where she will be able to practice ice skating, especially since she lives in a hot location. Mr Tuskins realizes the young girl's determination and offers her the use of his ice house.
Elfy soon is practicing vigorously. She seldom stops for food or
drink, she is determined to become a success. She makes a new friend with the ice house's resident, Mozzarella Mouse. Mozzarella encourages
Elefantina to try to add a salchow to her routine. She falls on her sitter many times but she is no quitter.
Mozzarella makes a call and gets her a tryout for the Elympic team. Elefantina and Mozzarella leave on the train for the tryouts. The pair is unaware that Elfantina has a jealous rival who would like to sabotage her chances. She continues to practice hard but needs to have that midair turn. Mozzarella tries to giver a pep talk, just when Elfy fears that her dream will not become a reality.
The rival's plans backfire as Elfy spins past the banana peel. The rival explodes through the wall. Even though Elfantina has gotten injured he fights back and makes it to Elympics Day. Success is achieved!
The unique and wonderful friendship between the elephant and the
mouse is simply delightful. Mozzarella never gives up believing in Elfy.
Throughout the story, Elfy will enchant readers and audiences will be
cheering for her. Simple yet expressive illustrations by Graham Percy are spectacular. With grit, determination and hardwork, dreams can become realities!
