Silver Seeds, by Paul Paolilli and Dan Brewer, takes the reader on an outdoor journey of discovery as seen through the eyes and senses of a young girl and boy. This journey begins when the morning sun 'nudges' the children out to play and ends at night when they go to bed to 'gather their dreams and hold them tight'.
Rich descriptions and comparisons in a poetic format make this book a delight for both children and adults. A shadow becomes a 'silent friend' who draws a picture on the ground in black crayon, fog is 'spun sugar', and clouds are 'creamy scoops of ice cream'.
The authors also incorporate a variety of literary styles throughout the book to aid parents in introducing the magic of letters, words, and early reading skills to their children. Children who have recently learned to read can enjoy this book alone or with an adult.
Blurred and soft paintings done in a combination of bold muted colors and pastels by illustrators Steve Johnson and Lou Fanchor lend a dreamy quality to the book that fits the style of writing and the natural world as seen through the eyes and imagination of childhood.
