Provide three types of apples - red, yellow, and green.
Wash the apples and cut them into pieces, and
place on three separate paper plates. Tell children
the name of each apple. Have them compare the color, texture and taste
of each type of apple.
Apple finger cubes

Pour 2 envelopes
unflavored gelatin into a bowl. Add 2 cups boiling water. Stir until
gelatin is dissolved. Add one 6 oz. can unsweetened
frozen apple juice concentrate.
Pour mixture into a lightly greased 9-by-13-inch cake
pan and chill. Cut into squares when firm.
Apple coleslaw

In a bowl mix together
1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup milk, and 1 tsp. lemon juice.
Grate 1 large apple and 1 small cabbage and add them to the mayonnaise
mixture.
Makes 8 servings.
Crock pot applesauce

8-10 medium apples,
peeled and diced, 1/2 cup water, 1
cup sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Combine
apples and water in the slow-cooking pot. Cover and cook on low for 4
hours until apples are very soft. Add sugar and
cook on low for another 30 minutes. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Note: apples
will be slightly chunky. If smooth is preferred, puree in a blender.
Applesauce Quarter, core and peel 3 to 4 sweet apples. Cut the quarter
pieces in half and put them in a saucepan. Add
1/2 cup water, sprinkle on 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and simmer, covered,
until the apples are tender (about 20 minutes). Have the children mash the
cooked apples with a potato masher or whirl them
in a blender. Cool and eat. makes 6 servings.
Apple Crisp

STEP 1
1. Child chooses and washes an
apple.
2. Teacher places the apple onto the apple peeler
machine.
3. Child turns the crank and watches as the machine
peels and slices the apple. (This was a
fascinating step for all involved.)
4. Child places the apple slices and counts them into a
dish/pan with a little water on the bottom.
STEP 2 - The Topping
Mix the following ingredients:
3/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2
cup of flour, 1/2 cup of oats, 1/2
cup of cinnamon, 1/2 cup of nutmeg, 1/3
cup of margarine melted in a microwave
Mix and stir. Pat topping onto the
top of the apples. Bake in a 350 oven for about
30 minutes (or until apples are bubbling and top is hardening).
Spoon into individual bowls and leave plenty of time to cool before
snack. YUM!
For a class of 15 we mixed and used two
batches of topping on a large pan.
Stuffed Baked Apples

Ingredients: Firm baking apples,
Butter or marg., Sugar, Hot water, Filling for Apples
Fillings: raisins or walnuts or honey or banana slices
or prunes or nutmeg or brown
sugar or coconut or cinnamon candies or orange slices
or pineapple. Toppings: ice cream or peanut butter or whipped cream or
cheese or vanilla pudding or granola or custard or lemon sherbet or jelly
Core apples and sprinkle with 1 t. sugar. Set in baking dish. Stuff apple
(combine several if you with). Pour hot water to cover bottom of dish.
Bake 400 30-35 min. Spoon liquid over apples every 10 min. while cooking.

Baked Apples Snack added

Make baked apples for the children to
enjoy at snack time. Wash and core one apple per
child. Place apples upright in a baking dish. Fill centers of
apples with raisins and brown sugar. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top.
Bake for one hour at 350. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Apple Muffins

Make some yummy apple muffins. Take a
packaged mix of oatmeal muffin mix
and add a cup of peeled and chopped apples. Bake as
usual. Truly delicious!
An Apple Smile

Core and slice an apple. Spread
peanut butter on one side of each apple slice.
Place four tiny marshmallows on top of the peanut butter
of one slice. Top with another apple slice, peanut
butter side down.

Individual Apple Pies

Ready-made pie crust (the kind that
comes packaged flat in the dairy case) canned
apple pie filling . Have each child cut out two large circles of pie
crust (using a large, round cookie cutter or a large
plastic drinking cup). Put a spoonful of pie
filling in the middle of one circle. Place the second dough
circle on top. Use a fork to crimp the edges and pierce a few holes in
the top to allow steam to escape. Bake in a toaster
oven 10-15 minutes or until brown.
Apple Honey Grahams

Give each child a slice of apple and a table knife for
dicing the apple. Spread a graham cracker slice
with peanut butter. Add honey, if you like. Sprinkle
diced apples on top.
Apple Sandwiches

Slice apples the "round way" so that a star
is formed in the center. Spread a slice with
peanut butter and top with a second slice to form a sandwich. (You
won't need to core the apples if the slices are thin.) You can use the
leftover end pieces for making applesauce or for dicing on the apple
grahams described above.
