It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel
By Caralyn Buehner
Illustrations By Mark Buehner

Review by: Ellen Dragonetti

"Are your manners monstrous or marvelous?" Find out, as you quiz your way through It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel. Carolyn and Mark Buehner bring to us an uniquely illustrated book all on the subject of manners.
Mark Buehner captivates us with his extraordinary pictures done by a technique of oil paint over acrylics, separated and reproduced in halftones. Not only are the pictures beautiful, but fun as well- because each page has a hidden dinosaur, cat, and rabbit to find, as well as the hilarious scene that matches the text in the form of a quiz on each page.
Children ages 4-8 will love answering the author Carolyn Buehners' animal manners questions as to proper conduct and behavior in different situations-ones that we have all dealt with in our daily lives. The correct answer is blended with outrageous ones, that inspire giggles and downright belly-laughs while teaching and reinforcing good manners and table habits.
For an extra clever added bonus, the back page offers a clue to each answer on every page. You must follow directions and look carefully to find the answer, if you want to check your own to see if it is correct.
It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel is a perfect holiday time book as we all prepare our families for meal time get-togethers. Equipping our children with the knowledge of appropriate behavior will hopefully enlighten them to the world of acceptable conduct. This book helps us to help our children in fun and silly ways children can relate to, and may even lead to less embarrassing social situations-that is, until our children start pointing out their relatives poor manners!
